This is the latest picture of Proton’s upcoming new model, the SRM, which stands for Satria Replacement Model or also known to some as the Proton Neo. This picture got to me from a friend, but I suspect the picture came from this blog. Anywho, this picture was taken at the Proton plant in Tanjung Malim (Proton City) and it clearly shows a number of SRMs in ready to sell form all prepped up for it’s launch.
Proton, being Proton has been delaying the SRM launch for quite a while and even missed the KL International Motorshow in premiering the SRM eventhough it was promised that the car would be launched in April. But as you can see, it’s finally materializing and it should be on the launch platform as soon as Dr. M and Pak Lah is ready to make it official. The previously rumoured launch date was end of May, but still no avail.
The SRM has quite an European look and finish to it, but it still remains loyal to it’s Satria class design - a sporty and rugged look. The pro hatchback will be available in 1.3 and 1.6 litre and will be priced around almost the same price as the Gen2. Looks to me like it’s a hatchback version of a Gen2, as it’s also using the same Campro engine found in the Gen2 and Waja Campro, but I really hope the whole Campro experience would be unleashed with this car, as the Campro has lack some promised technologies and is being limited for now as the current version of the Campro is still.. not final. Typical of Proton, no, to release something early in the midst of rushing to get it’s product to the market despite sacrificing some important features of the engine.
However, Proton is also in the makes of a 1.8 litre version of the Campro and this may be fitted onto a future version of the SRM, sort of similar to how the Satria came out with a 1.3 engine and eventually the GTi arrived with a 1.8 engine. We’ll have to wait to see, but for now await the launch and debut on national roads.
