Eventhough we, the PKBM(L) lost the marching competition because of me and Jimmy’s right-left turn mistake, I still arrived home in an ultra tired state only to find a nice big green colored paper bag on my bed. Puzzled, I was still tired but slowly going through the bag. Inside was a medium sized box, which I thought was a blender or something, and it was wrapped with a cream yellow glossy paper. Since 80% of the people on my house always open stuff eventhough they don’t know who it’s for - and I’m still as tired as @!#$, so I opened it lah.

Lo and behold, it’s a Motorola SLVR L7! Immediately I phoned my mom of course, worried that maybe it’s for somebody else and that I thought it was a box of char kuey teow and was hungry. Strangely enough she said it’s mine. Called dad just to make sure and he says the same thing and that it’s to replace my current Nokia 6610. So up to now, I still do not know why I got this phone. All I can say is I can only smile.

Another thing that most Malaysians do is they keep the plastic wrapping on their new phones/cars only to rip it off the next week anyway. Hm.

I won’t waste any time in telling you this is definetly not a worth-the-RM750 phone, but what the heck, it’s my first Motorola and I’ll try to go easy on telling you how it runs (based on a standard L7 setup and 9 hour usage).

First off, it’s a bloody slim phone. But with Motorola size always comes with a trade off and for this one it’s the cavemen age VGA camera and MicroSD based memory solution. However, there is one thing that I cannot stop ranting about this phone, it’s the ability to support MP3 ringtones. Motorola came up with this hi-fi alien spaceage technology to turn MIDI and MP3 ringtones into a single channel audio file and therefore making it more high quality with the same MIDI properties. But get this, you can’t use your own MP3 ringtones, no matter how low tech it is!

Though I despise the fact that I have to now carry around a MicroSD adapter to transfer stuff into the card, I can’t deny that this thing is pretty small (more like petite) and it’s understandable why engineers chose to use this card for the slim L7 - it’s roughly the size of a Malaysian 10 cent coin!

Like I said, Silver (it’s from now on name) is pretty darn small. Here is a size comparison to a V3 (open) and you can see how much Motorola had to shrink from the screen and keypad to make it have curves. Not that the V3 is a bulky phone, it’s just that Silver is smaller, hah! Odd though that the keypad on the V3 is dimmer than Silver’s.

This isn’t the best shot for a screen comparison, but roughly you can tell the contrast and sharpness difference of the L7 and V3 and it’s quite obvious which one has a prettier face. For sound, like I said Silver has that MIDI-MP3 technology and that combined with the stereo speakers and stereo playback ability, it’s ear wax candy at it’s best. At heart, the L7 is truly a budget music phone, and it serves that purpose well.

Lest we forget that aside from the ringtone flaw, Silver has it’s own tricks up it’s sleeves, I remember Jayathurai’s L7 that I browsed through last week and just as an SMS arrived a Slipknot song was playing, so I’ll have to find out how he does it. Silver doesn’t come with Infrared (maybe it’s because it’s too damn high maintainence for IRDA) but it does come with Bluetooth.

Overall, it’s a good phone for the people who can’t care less about phone personality, but for me I’d still say it isn’t worth your money if you’re looking into a more personal cellphone experience. 6/10. Actually it’s 5/10, but I gave it another point because the L7 box is the down right coolest cellphone box I’ve ever come across, bar none. I’ll try to make a gif out of the process and upload it soon just to show how it works. Trust me, it’s worth it when a lazy ass like me wants to show people something.

EDIT : Alright, ringtone problem partially solved, it appears that I have to manually transfer the file to the phone memory and then it will appear in the ringtone menu. But, there’s still a catch, the phone’s in built memory is only 8mb big.. Looks like it’s back to cutting up files for me..
